Continuity & Growth
Our Teaching Philosophy
At ZoukLab, we believe that great dancing comes from understanding, not just memorizing. Our curriculum is carefully crafted to build upon each concept, ensuring you develop a deep, intuitive understanding of Brazilian Zouk.
We care about your long-term progress. Each level prepares you for the next, creating a clear path from your very first step to becoming a confident, expressive dancer.

Build a Strong Foundation
Essentials
Your Brazilian Zouk journey begins here. Learn the essential movement vocabulary that forms the backbone of the dance, while developing basic concepts that will support your growth throughout your dance journey. Expand Your Movement & Expression
Fundamentals
Build further on your foundations by expanding your vocabulary, exploring/creating more patterns, and deepening your understanding of Brazilian Zouk concepts. This level introduces body isolations, head movements, different turning techniques and concepts as musicality, dynamics and connection.
Our Approach: We expect students to remain at this level for approximately 1.5 - 2 years, as it takes up to two year to complete the full curriculum. We work in blocks of 3 classes per topic: First class focuses on exercises to build solid technique, second class explores vocabulary and how to use the technique in moves, third class integrates technique and moves into your dance with variations.
We will work on
- Variations and combinations of basic steps. Changing directions, leader position, dynamic and frame tension
- Body isolations & undulations: Frontal, lateral, and diagonal movements with body isolations
- Introduction to head movements: Linear (active & passive), Balão, Rotisserie, tilted turns
- Various turns: Rotisserie turns (dive & throw, continued on spot & on line), tilted turns (on spot, linear, different endings), compass turn, airplane turn, paddle turn, pivot turn
- Musical understanding: Musical structure (1 to 8), phrasing, different counting and interpretation
- Movement quality: Impulse, control, and grounding; torsion & counter-body movements (cross position); compensation in head movements
- Partner connection: Comfortable close embrace, maintaining frame and elasticity, body/chest leading, pre-movements, responsive dialogue, parallel & cross system (head movements), magnet contact, elasticity & body lead in head movements
- Community engagement: Attending 2+ Zouk socials monthly, attending first international Zouk events, helping starters feel welcome, weekly solo training investment
Key Concepts
- Understanding and execution of Level 1 essential movements.
